Year 9 Media Studies

We are surrounded by the media, but don’t know how to think critically about what we are being exposed to. In this half year course, students learn about media literacy, develop critical thinking skills, as well as practical skills (and can contribute to TC News and enter competitions) , have fun, and explore the subject, while preparing for senior Media Studies.


Course Overview

Term 1
Week 1, 2 and 3- Introduction to semiotics codes/ conventions
Week 4- Basic audience theory and positioning, Responses and debates
Week 5 , 6 and 7- Basic representation introduction- stereotypes- gender, race- NZ too (Kiwi bloke and toxic masculinity, ethnicity and cultural representations)
Week 8, 9 and 10?- Deconstructing an advert???

Term 2
Week 1 How the media has been influenced by the internet/ globalisation
Week 2-3 Social media- link to trolling and fake news- watch docs- activity around consumption but not as extensive as 1.1
Week 4-5 How to make PSAs
Week 6-8 Make the PSA- showcase on TC News/ assemblies
