Media Studies 201
The course aims to build on the skills developed in Level 1 Media Studies and to enable you to understand, question and contribute to the constant flow of media messages around you. We will analyse the codes and conventions used in media texts, advertising, television and the internet and how audiences interact with media texts. We also explore ethical issues in the media and media representations, as well as focusing on how to deconstruct media texts. You will use this knowledge to shoot and edit a music video. A key focus in Media Studies is student agency, with the teachers modelling the required skills and context and with you choosing topics and mediums (written, film, verbal/recorded, presentations) that you want, within the constraints of the criteria.

Term 1
Embark on an exciting journey as we delve into the captivating world of media representations! Let's kickstart the adventure by refreshing our knowledge of key terminologies. From there, we'll dive deep into the fascinating realm of media portrayals.
Prepare to be captivated as you choose your own representation to explore and research (2.3, 3 credits). You have complete freedom to choose any media representation you want (of a group, place, event etc.) and present your findings in a creative and innovative manner, as long as you meet the criteria.
But that's not all! Get ready to unleash your inner filmmaker as we embark on the thrilling task of planning a video (2.5, 4 credits). Whether you prefer to work independently, with a partner, or in a dynamic group of three, the choice is yours. In the process, you'll get the opportunity to develop your skills in planning, framing practice shots, or even creating a rough cut of your vision. Excitingly, your hard work and dedication will be due next term, leaving you eagerly anticipating the culmination of your artistic endeavors.
Term 2

We enter the final stretch of music video production this term! Your eagerly anticipated creations are due, and the stage is set for your talents to shine brightly.
As we venture through the term, we'll embark on a journey of exploration and critical thinking. Midway through, we'll engage in a Derived Grade Assessment centered around the mesmerizing world of The Mandalorian.
Then prepare to delve deep into the fascinating realm of ethical issues in the media (2.7, 3 credits). With your keen analytical skills, you'll unravel the complex tapestry of moral dilemmas and thought-provoking questions that arise in the ever-evolving media landscape. Recommended Prior Learning
Preferred: at least 12 credits from Media 101. Credits from English 101 will be considered, but these should include creative or formal writing. Students will need to be able to respond in various formats to a variety of media texts.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Purchasing an 8GB SD card is advised. During the year, we will go to Capital E on a trip, and may have another media trip scheduled also.
