University Entrance

A person shall be qualified for entrance to a university in New Zealand if they have obtained:

  1. A completed NCEA Level 3 Certificate with at least 14 credits in each of 3 subjects from the Approved Subject List and 
  2. 10 Numeracy credits co-requisite Level 1 Numeracy unit standard 32406 or Te Pāngarau unit standard 32412, or certain achievement standards and 
  3. 10 Literacy credits at NCEA Level 2 (or higher) 5 in reading, 5 in writing.


Gaining University Entrance does not necessarily guarantee you a place in a university course. Some courses have Guaranteed Entry Scores or a Points Ranking System. To find out about these, check the website of the universities.

Many Polytechnics offer Degree level courses as well. These degree level courses also require University Entrance to study.
