Entry to this course is at the discretion of Teacher in Charge of English Language Learners (ELL), based on diagnostic testing.


English Language Learners: Proficient (Level 3)
This is a year-long multilevel course which provides English Language Learners (ELL) an opportunity to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students also work on extending their English vocabulary. Students are supported in developing their writing, with a focus on different text types, such as information texts, descriptions and recounts.


There is diagnostic testing done throughout the year to monitor students' progression. Assessments are offered at multiple levels.

Digital learning is a key component of this class.



Course Overview

Term 1
This course responds to the language needs of the learners therefore there is some level and diagnostic testing in Term 1. After that, students work on context-rich language development to grow and strengthen their English language, especially as it relates to subject-learning at school.
Students' focus will be on integrating their English language learning into mainstream class-work.

Term 2
Students continue to work on language development to grow and strengthen their English language.
If students are ready there will be some skill-building for the CAA literacy and numeracy, which they should be ready to attempt.
There will be opportunities to achieve NCEA Level 2 credits in ELL, especially if learners are in Year 11 or 12. Capable students may be able to attempt NCEA3 Unit Standards (ELL).

Term 3
There will be further opportunities to achieve NCEA Level 2 credits in ELL, especially if learners are in Year 11 or 12. Capable students may be able to attempt NCEA3 Unit Standards (ELL).

Term 4
Senior students will use this time to prepare for externals in other subjects, with help from the teacher. They may also be offered support to achieve UE literacy credits as appropriate.
