Course Description

University entrance literacy, including at least one of 91098 and 91100, or at the discretion of the Head of the English Department.


English (Tupaia) 301
In this course, you will study a range of literature genres which will engage and develop your ability to analyse texts and respond critically to them, and to make sophisticated connections between texts. A deliberate focus on Pasifika and Māori texts will be a feature of this courese. Prepare for high engagement with both reading and writing tasks. You will be expected to read an extended text in your own time, and to access and read secondary academic material in the course of your preparation for a variety of assessments. An oral presentation will also feature within this course.


Course Overview

Term 1
Term 1 will involve the study of a series of poems and/or short stories, as well as a film study, culminating in an internally assessed close viewing based on a film or films studied in class.

Term 2
During this term, students will carry out a critical inquiry into language or literature.

Term 3
Term 3 will involve an extended text study, with internal assessment centering on a connections task in which students critically examine the links between a variety of texts studied both in class and independently. There will also be an opportunity this term for students to hone their speaking and presentation skills, and to deliver an oral presentation to their class.

Term 4
Revision for the NCEA exam in November.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

You may be offered the opportunity to purchase a copy of the extended text (approximately $20) taught in class. There are no scheduled trips, but opportunities to attend theatrical productions or other events may present themselves from time to time, incurring a small cost. You will need to have a folder and refill, or exercise book, for using alongside your device.
