Course Description

Physics 201
This course aims to introduce important basic concepts, principles and models in Physics, and helps students apply these to explain physical phenomena. Areas of study include Mechanics, Waves, and Nuclear Physics. Practical skills will continue to be developed from previous years' Science study. Electricity is an optional external standard that may be done with the HOD's consent. 


Course Overview

Term 1
Atoms and Radioactivity. Different types of radioactivity and their properties and uses.
3 credit internal assessment based on this work.
Then start the Mechanics topic which is working towards the Mechanics 6 credit external exam in November.

Term 2
Mechanics - continued.
2.1 Practical Physics investigation - this is a 4 credit internal assessment that requires students to plan, carry out and write a report for a Physics investigation.

Term 3
Waves topic - preparing for the 4 credit external exam on waves.
End of term 3 there is a 3 credit internal assessment that is a research task on an application of Physics.

Term 4
Revision and preparation for November external exams

Recommended Prior Learning

Compulsory: 12 credits in Level 1 Science with at least 4 being from external standards, preferably including Achievement Standard 90940 (Mechanics).

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

A Scipad workbook, used for classwork and homework ($25), is recommended.

Pathway

Physics is a fundamental Science which will lead to many career options such as Engineering, Medicine, Architecture and other technical subjects. It is also a well respected subject that employers view highly when looking at what students have studied at school.
