GLO101

Level 1 Global Studies 101

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. Struthers.

Global Studies:  - understanding big ideas about humanity and issues we face.

This course is designed to get you thinking.  It is designed to give students an introduction to the disciplines of Sociology, Legal Studies and Senior Social Studies. We look into society and a broad range of contexts to understand humanity and how people interact.  Students will engage with a range of points of view, perspectives and values to gain a deeper insight into global issues.  This course develops inquiry skills as students conduct research into social issues and topics, allowing them to follow areas of personal interest, allowing them to express their prior knowledge.  As students explore institutions and social constructs they will improve their interpersonal skills, developing empathy and understanding of differing perspectives.  We will focus on how you have the power to make a change in society and the rights and responsibilities we all have as global citizens.

Course Overview

Term 1
This term we look at femininity and masculinity, to understand how this construct has developed and changed over time. Students will then understand how social media has impacted and changed the way we interact resulting in extreme differing opinions, beliefs and ideas.
Students will begin a social inquiry delving into social media’s influence on society.

Term 2
Students will continue their study of social media’s impact on the world and will complete their Social Inquiry this term. Then look at institutions such as Government, Economy, Religion and Education to understand what a social institution is and how they shape society.

Term 3
Students are performing their own social action project to influence people in response to our learning about the globalisation of products. They will then move into understanding how cultures change over time and in response to external pressures eg climate change, food security, and historical and current epidemics.

Term 4
Cultures changing over time will continue this term.
