NCEA Level 1 Dance 101

Course Description

Dance 101
This course covers dance choreography, performance and analysis. Students explore the elements of dance in depth. Choreographic devices are applied in composition. Students study different styles of dance including but not limited to Jive, Contemporary, Gumboot Dance and Jazz. The external standard requires students to describe and demonstrate their understanding of a professional dance work.

Dance is a University approved subject. Skills gained in dance such as creative processes, analysis, innovation, communicating ideas, and collaborating effectively with others can be applied to a wide variety of occupations.

Participation in a live public performance is a compulsory aspect of the course.


Course Overview

Term 1
Students will explore the elements of dance and begin work on their portfolios.
Two dance compositions will be developed in Term 1.

Term 2
This term students learn and present three dances in the annual dance showcase at the end of the term.

Term 3
Students complete their final composition and their elements of dance portfolios. Preparation for external examination takes place.

Term 4
Preparation for external examination continues.

Recommended Prior Learning

Year 10 Dance or examples of previous dance experience.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students will be required to provide performance blacks. This could be a plain black t-shirt or singlet, and plain black leggings, shorts or track pants.
Black jazz shoes are highly recommended.

'TC Dance' t-shirts and hoodies may be available for purchase throughout the year. These are optional and cost ranges between $30 - $60.

Optional trips to live professional dance performances will be offered and are a valuable learning experience for students. The cost is usually between $10-20 per performance.
