Year 9 CORE Mātauranga Māori
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Kōkā R. Hautapu.
9 Mātauranga Māori
Year 9 ākonga can opt into a core academic class that offers English, Science & Social Studies in tandem with Mātauranga Māori. These ākonga will still enrol in Health and Physical Education, Maths, and six half-year options from the Arts, Languages, Māori, and Technology, i.e. the classes / course load is not different, rather English, Science & Social Studies add distinctly Māori perspectives to existing subject matter. For example, Māori tell stories about the night skies that guided navigators onboard ancestral waka to Aotearoa. How, then, do these stories compare and contrast with Western astrology narratives? How did the universe begin? How are stars born? What are they made of? What Rigel and Pleiades-influenced traditions are practised across the planet? What customs are unique to Aotearoa? What inspired Robert Sullivan's seminal work, Star Waka? What does the Witi Ihimaera anthology, Navigating the Stars, reveal about us? How might we use our stories, and our history, to guide our future? What experiences can we offer our ākonga to touch, see, and do alongside those of the traditional classroom?
