NCEA Level 2/3 Art History 201/301
Course Description
Teacher in Charge:
ARH201/301
Level 2 and 3 (currently the year 13s will do the same content as the year 12s, but adjusted slightly for their version of the internals at level 3.)
Art History will give students the opportunity to learn about interpreting art and further their understanding of art in context. They will also examine historical events that influenced the art and how art changed as a response to humanity. This knowledge can deepen the application of and meaning behind the art that they create and allow them to develop their work using the knowledge gained through this course. The students also have the opportunity to develop their literacy skills with a new focus while learning about both traditional, digital, and contemporary art.
This course allows students to examine key art movements throughout history such as Dadaism, Civil Rights, and art as a response to inequities. Students will also examine significant art pieces to be deconstructed through analysis, and contexts and environments in which art movements and pieces were created. This course is helpful for students seeking to extend into tertiary education in both the arts and history sectors as it provides helpful background and contexts.
A link to Matauranga Maori will be explored through the cultural context of Maori art, Whakairo, and Ta Moko.
Recommended prior learning: Although there are no compulsory courses, it may help if students have completed Level 1 Art or History, or if they have an interest in the subjects already.
Planning to have at least two gallery visits during the year.
