Course Description

Pasifika Studies 322

Noa'ia, Mauri, Ni Sa Bula Vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Tālofa, Kia orana, Mālō e lelei, Mālō nī, Talofa lava,

Tēnā koutou katoa and warm Pacific greetings to you all.

Pasifika Studies aims to develop students' knowledge and awareness of the history, diversity, and contemporary issues of the Pacific and Pacific people. Students learn about Pacific cultures, identities and experiences as well as explore Pacific histories, traditions, indigenous knowledge, art and dance.

All are welcome to join this voyage of our Pacific story. 

Course Overview

Term 1
ko na mauri!

The focus of this term is the majestic Micronesia. By examining case studies of Pacific societies such as Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru and more, we will explore culture, traditions, customs and history.

Term 2
Talofa lava!

The focus of this term is the passionate Polynesia. By exploring the changes and development of proud nations such as Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau and the Cook Islands, students will gain insight into Polynesia's rich connection with Aotearoa.

Term 3
Bula Vinaka!

This term is all about the magnificent Melanesia. Students will investigate case studies of indigenous knowledge in nations such as Vanuatu, Fiji, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, with the aim to connect to indigenous knowledge from their own cultural roots.

Term 4
This term is a celebration and collecting together all of the knowledge gained on the years voyage. Students will be able to present their findings in a presentation and practice skills, dance, food and enjoy a space for Pasefika led by our Pasefika leaders.

Pathway

This course builds foundational knowledge that can guide students on a pathway to areas such as a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Pacific Studies from Victoria University, Mentorship programs, Leadership development opportunities and more.
