Do you enjoy designing and making products ?
The focus of this course is on developing students creative abilities to design products using their knowledge of the given focus material for each term. This will involve learning creative design techniques as well as drawing skills to communicate their design ideas effectively. Students will make the product that they design each term in the given focus material, to build up their repertoire of practical skills.
The project pathways will be:
Term 1: Jewellery Designer - Maker
Term 2: Product Designer - Maker
Term 3: Fabricator
This course is designed to give a strong focus on learning about and understanding materials. It has three specific material foci, one per term, and this involves theory to build knowledge.
The material groups will be:
Term 1: Polymers
Term 2: Timber
Term 3: Metal
Course Overview
Term 1
Working with Polymers
Material Focus: Plastics (Polymers)
During Term 1 you will be introduced to the world of polymers. You will learn about and explore these materials to understand their composition, structure and performance properties.
Project Focus: Jewellery: Designer - Maker
You will be taught new techniques to further develop your creative design skills. Then you will use your new design skills, and knowledge of polymers, to design and make a piece of jewellery.
Term 2
Working with Timbers
Materials Focus: Timbers
During Term 2 you will be introduced to the world of timber. You will learn about and explore timbers to understand their composition, structure and performance properties.
Project Focus: Product: Designer-Maker
You will be taught further creative design techniques to continue to develop your creative skills, Then you will use your creative skills, and knowledge of timbers to design and make a product.
Term 3
Working with Metals
Material Focus: Metals
During Term 3 you will be introduced to the world of metals. You will learn about and explore metals to understand their composition, structure and performance properties.
Project Focus: Fabricator
You will be taught further creative design techniques to continue to develop your creative skills. Then you will use your creative skills, and knowledge of metals to design and make a small item in metal using basic manipulation techniques or processes.
Term 4
Yet to be decided - dependent on time.
Recommended Prior Learning
You will need a strong interest in design and in developing your creativity as a designer; as well as a strong interest in working with materials to make products. This course will include theory, design and practical work.
You need to be able to work responsibly within the school workshop area, and well with other students to form a strong learning community within the class, that supports one another to succeed.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
There is a contribution of $80 toward the materials used for the take home components of the course.
Students will required to bring a pen and pencil to each lesson.
