Economics & Business

This course is an introduction to the studies of Economics, Business and Accounting. The course:

i) Enables learners to understand how an economy works. Learners build up an economic simulation in the classroom to explore how consumers in New Zealand make economic decisions about:
· earning income
· the value of savings
· spending
· borrowing
· improving personal net worth
ii) Develops Financial Literacy skills through a series of realistic assignments where the learners research and learn about
· personal budgeting
· financial decision-making
iii) Develops a practical understanding of enterprise and business. Learners complete the Level 1 NCEA Business Studies Achievement Standard “Carry out and review a product-based business activity within a classroom context with direction” (6 Credits). This course delivers 6 Literacy credits.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

One half day to prepare and attend the Tawa College Y10 Market Day held at College in the hall. Learners may be required to contribute funds towards their group business activity.

Pathway

This course will lead into the new NCEA L1 Commerce course which is currently under development as part of the NCEA review, and combines & replaces NCEA L1 Accounting and NCEA Level 1 Economics.
